Comparison
SquareTally vs PlanSwift
PlanSwift is a general construction takeoff platform, owned by ConstructConnect, that has been digitising plan sets for a very long time and covers every trade on the drawing. SquareTally quotes hardwood floors off that same drawing and ends as either a branded PDF quote or linked QuickBooks Online drafts. One of those is a much bigger product than the other, and that is exactly the point of comparing them.
PlanSwift is horizontal, SquareTally is vertical. If you take off more trades than flooring, PlanSwift is the obvious buy and this page should not talk you out of it. If flooring is the whole job and the estimate has to reach QuickBooks Online, a general takeoff tool leaves you doing the last third by hand.
What PlanSwift actually is
PlanSwift digitises a plan set so quantities can be pulled off it: areas, lengths and counts, across whatever trade you point it at. For flooring specifically its pages describe one-click area select for tile, carpet, hardwood or laminate floor areas, and quick perimeter measurement for nail strip and baseboard. That perimeter feature is a genuinely good detail that we do not have.
Its AI layer, Takeoff Boost, is described as a suite of AI tools built into the software — auto takeoff with presets for areas, lengths and counts; auto count that finds every instance across selected plans; auto scale that sets scale across every page in a plan set in one action; and auto bookmark that links floor plans to detail pages and sections. Auto scale across a whole plan set is a real time saver on a thick drawing, and it is more automation than we apply to calibration.
Where PlanSwift wins
- Every trade that is not flooring. Concrete, framing, drywall, roofing, earthwork. Trade plug-ins and starter packs with templates, parts and assemblies. We measure hardwood.
- Counts and lengths. Auto count across a plan set, and perimeter runs for baseboard and nail strip. SquareTally traces areas; it does not count fixtures or chase linear runs.
- Whole-plan-set automation. Setting scale on every page in one action beats calibrating a page at a time, which is what we ask for.
- Maturity and install base. A long-established product with a large user community, a documented knowledge base and a corporate owner behind it.
The cost shapes are very different
PlanSwift's pricing page lists PlanSwift Professional at $2,000 USD annually, stating that the annual subscription includes support, software updates and 2 hours of training. There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card.
SquareTally's plan-measuring tiers start at $49 a month with the Solo plan, per shop with unlimited seats, metered on projects rather than users. A shop quoting a handful of jobs a month is comparing roughly $588 a year against $2,000, and getting a much narrower tool for the difference. A shop taking off five trades is comparing the wrong two products.
PlanSwift is Windows software. ConstructConnect's own support documentation states it can only be installed on Windows 10 or 11 Pro, that it cannot be installed directly on a Mac, and that Bootcamp or a virtual machine such as Parallels is neither tested nor guaranteed. For a design-led shop running Macs this is usually the end of the conversation before price comes up. SquareTally runs in a browser.
Where the two diverge for flooring
A takeoff gives you square footage. Quoting a hardwood job needs four more things after that, and this is the stretch where a general tool stops helping.
Waste by laying pattern. Straight plank commonly carries 10%; herringbone and chevron carry 20%, because every board is cut at an angle. SquareTally applies the rate per room from the pattern assigned — the herringbone calculator shows the arithmetic. In a general takeoff tool this is a formula you maintain yourself.
Price from your own dealer sheets. Hardwood pricing comes from a distributor's PDF, priced to your zone and dealer tier, reissued twice a year. SquareTally reads the figure out of that PDF and shows you the page it came from before $/sqft is filled. The dealer page covers the price shelf in full.
Two output paths. Download a branded material PDF, or create linked QuickBooks drafts: priced material grouped by product and pattern, plus a labor skeleton at $0. The integration page lists every field written. PlanSwift's pages describe printing or exporting to Excel, which means the last hop into the accounting system stays manual.
A render of each room. Per room, in the floor chosen, doors and windows where the plan draws them. No takeoff tool produces this, because it is not a takeoff feature.

The one-sentence version
PlanSwift takes off everything on the drawing and hands you quantities. SquareTally takes off the hardwood and hands you a branded PDF or linked estimates in QuickBooks Online with the material already priced. Multi-trade estimators should buy PlanSwift; hardwood shops should talk to us.
- How much does PlanSwift cost?
- Their pricing page lists PlanSwift Professional at $2,000 USD annually, including support, software updates and 2 hours of training, with a 14-day free trial.
- Does PlanSwift run on a Mac?
- Not natively — Windows 10 or 11 Pro only, with Bootcamp and virtual machines explicitly untested by ConstructConnect. We run in a browser.
- Does PlanSwift export to QuickBooks Online?
- Their pages describe Excel export and exporting into an estimate; QuickBooks Online is not named on the pages we checked. Ours writes to QuickBooks Online directly.
- Which is better for a general contractor?
- PlanSwift. A GC needs every trade off one plan set, and flooring is one line of that bid.
- Does SquareTally do baseboard or trim?
- No. We measure floor areas. PlanSwift's perimeter measurement covers nail strip and baseboard, and that is a real gap on our side.
