Comparison

SquareTally vs MeasureSquare

MeasureSquare has been measuring floors since long before we existed, across carpet, sheet vinyl, tile, stone and hardwood, on desktop, mobile and in the room with a laser. We do one narrow thing: turn a hardwood plan set into reviewed quote lines, then create a branded PDF or linked estimates in QuickBooks Online. Here is where each of those is the right purchase.

Buy MeasureSquare if your measurements come off a job site and your trade mix is wider than hardwood. Buy SquareTally if your measurements come off an architect's PDF, you quote hardwood, and the estimate has to land in QuickBooks Online without being typed twice.

They are not competing for the same afternoon

The honest framing is that these two products meet a job at different hours. MeasureSquare's centre of gravity is the measurement itself — its mobile products exist so an estimator can walk a building with a laser distance meter and leave with a takeoff. Its desktop editions carry that into pattern work, and its site describes estimating all types of flooring, including carpet, sheet vinyl, tile and hardwood, with seam diagrams generated for you.

SquareTally starts one step later and finishes one step further on. It assumes a drawing already exists, because in the work we were built around it always does: a builder sends an architect's plan set, and the flooring gets quoted off that sheet weeks before anybody has keys to the building. From there the job is not really measuring at all. It is pricing the material against dealer sheets, showing the client what the floor looks like, and creating either a customer-ready PDF or linked estimates in the accounting system the shop runs on.

Where MeasureSquare wins

A comparison page that cannot name the other product's strengths is worth nothing, so:

  • Carpet and seam planning. Broadloom is a seam problem before it is an area problem, and MeasureSquare generates seam diagrams. SquareTally has no concept of a seam. This is the single clearest reason to close this page and go buy theirs.
  • Trade breadth. Sheet vinyl, tile, stone — MeasureSquare ships a separate Stone & Tile product on top of its main line. We price hardwood and the patterns hardwood is laid in.
  • On-site measuring. Laser-driven takeoff and a room scanner. If the estimator's measurements are taken standing in the room, we are the wrong shape of tool entirely.
  • Breadth of platform. A CRM, a cloud tier, an API, mobile and desktop editions, plus a free toolset. This is a mature product line with a long install base behind it.
  • Onboarding you can buy. Their pricing page lists free self-paced web classes, a paid starter kit with an assigned implementation trainer, and in-person days at their Pasadena office. We answer email.

Where the money model differs

MeasureSquare 8 is sold per user, per year, in three tiers. On annual billing their pricing page shows Retail at $540.00, Multi-family at $1,640.00 and Commercial at $1,970.00, each usd per year for 1 user, with a quantity selector for additional seats, read from their pricing page on . That is the ordinary shape of this market — our pricing page explains why we went the other way. SquareTally sells a plan with its seats included and unlimited projects: Solo is one seat, Pro carries five, Studio fifteen, and the bill never moves with how many projects the shop takes on in a month.

The tier that overlaps with us is their middle one. MeasureSquare describes Multi-family as best for blueprint-based residential and light commercial projects, which is the work SquareTally was built for — quoting off a plan set rather than off a job site. That tier is $1,640.00 per year for one user. SquareTally Solo is $948 a year billed monthly, or $790 billed annually, for one seat — and Pro, at $2,150 a year, carries five seats. Compare the total for the number of estimators who will use the tool.

Their Retail tier is much closer to us on price at $540.00 a year, and their own page says it is best for on-site residential and showroom estimates — measuring in the room, which is the part we do not do at all. The cheap tier and the blueprint tier are aimed at different jobs, and it is worth being sure which one a quote you are given actually covers.

Which model works out cheaper depends on the shape of the shop, and the arithmetic is worth doing rather than taking either vendor's word for it. A single owner-operator compares one seat with one seat. A three-person shop where everyone touches an estimate pays for three seats on a per-user plan and one Pro plan on ours, with two seats to spare.

MeasureSquare 8 is Windows software. All three tiers carry a "Windows Only" badge on their pricing page. Their mobile products run on iPad and iPhone, so the company covers other platforms, but the desktop estimating product this page compares against does not. SquareTally runs in a browser, on whatever the shop already has.

What SquareTally does that MeasureSquare does not

Three things, and they are all downstream of the measurement rather than part of it.

PDF or QuickBooks output. A measured job can download a branded material PDF quote without an accounting connection. Or it can create linked QuickBooks drafts: priced material grouped by product and laying pattern, plus a labor skeleton at $0. The integration page lists every field written and every scope requested, which is a short list on purpose.

Pricing from your own dealer sheets. Hardwood pricing does not come from a catalogue, it comes from the PDF a distributor emailed you, priced to your zone and your dealer tier, superseded twice a year. SquareTally reads the answer out of that PDF and shows you the page it came from so you can check the cell before $/sqft is filled. The dealer page goes through this properly.

A render of each room in the floor chosen. Per room, in the product assigned, with the doors and windows where the plan draws them. It is the picture that does not otherwise exist at quoting time, and no competitor we know of produces it.

The one-sentence version

MeasureSquare is a measuring platform for every flooring trade, sold by the seat. SquareTally is a hardwood quoting tool with branded PDF and QuickBooks outputs, sold by the shop. A shop doing broadloom carpet off job-site measurements should buy theirs. A shop quoting hardwood off plan sets into QuickBooks should talk to us.

Does MeasureSquare integrate with QuickBooks Online?
Yes. MeasureSquare CRM explicitly lists QuickBooks Online and Xero integration. It is a separate product from MeasureSquare 8; confirm the required licenses and document workflow. This accounting detail was checked on 7 September 2026.
Is MeasureSquare priced per user?
Yes. On annual billing their pricing page shows Retail at $540.00, Multi-family at $1,640.00 and Commercial at $1,970.00, each usd per year for 1 user, with a quantity selector for more seats. Ours is a plan with its seats included — one on Solo, five on Pro, fifteen on Studio — and unlimited projects.
Does MeasureSquare 8 run on a Mac?
No — all three MeasureSquare 8 tiers are badged Windows Only on their pricing page. Their mobile products run on iPad and iPhone. We run in a browser.
Which one should a carpet contractor choose?
MeasureSquare, without hesitating. Carpet is a seam problem, they draw seam diagrams, and we do not model seams at all.
Can SquareTally measure on site with a laser meter?
No. We measure from the plan set by calibrating a printed dimension and tracing each room. Measurements taken standing in the room are MeasureSquare's territory.
Can we use both?
Some shops reasonably would — measure on site in theirs, quote hardwood off plans in ours. There is no integration between the two, so it means keying a number across once.
